Urology team first in NHS to use latest robot for prostate cancer surgery
Brianna’s mother, Christine, was diagnosed with ocular cancer 5 years ago. Thanks to the exceptional care and treatment she received at St Paul’s Eye Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the cancer was removed and Brianna wants to give back to the hospital that gave her family hope.
“This hospital saved my mum’s her life,” Brianna said. “I want to do something meaningful for my birthday, something that will help other families facing similar battles.
“I also want to raise greater awareness of eye cancer because when my Mum was diagnosed we didn’t even know that there was such a thing. Also, my Mum’s cancer meant that she had to have her eye removed, so contending with cancer plus the loss of an eye and with a young family was scary.”
Brianna’s daring skydive will support cancer research and patient care at St Paul’s Eye Unit.
“We are incredibly proud of Brianna,” said Professor Heinrich Heimann, Ocular Oncology Surgeon. “Her courage and generosity are truly inspiring, and her efforts will make a real difference in the lives of future patients.
“Our aim is to save the eye and save the vision, however, there are circumstances such as the tumour is too large and the amount of radiotherapy required would damage the eye, and, therefore, the only option available to surgeons is to remove the eye.”
Brianna is encouraging the community to support her cause by donating through her Just Giving page. Her journey will also be documented on social media, where she hopes to spread awareness about ocular cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment.
